I spent my professional animal welfare career running humane societies and I loved every minute of it. Yes, there were “bad” days and I did get sad more than most other jobs, but I truly felt fulfilled. Before this though, I volunteered for 7 years at an animal control agency and to this day I firmly believe animal control is at the apex of animal welfare. Don’t get me wrong, humane societies and rescues are vital to the overall cause of saving animals, but for the simple fact that most animal control agencies MUST accept animals that are brought to them, not to mention having to enforce the laws, creates a new level of responsibility with which most other groups don’t have to contend.
