I Saved A Life Today
During my morning walk with my dog Frank, I was presented with the opportunity to save the life of another dog. It wasn’t anything heroic. I didn’t risk my life to save this dog, unless you count being licked to death. But I did stop to keep this dog from running into the street and was able to locate his home. But it wasn’t necessarily his life I saved.

SavingLife Helps Network Partner
Our intent at SavingLife is NOT to point fingers and chastise our peers. We understand that, just as in any industry, there are those who are not doing things properly and that they must either change their ways or find a new line of work, but publicly shaming them is not the way to go. More importantly though, often an organization identifies an issue and makes changes to correct the problems, but the focus ends up being on the problem instead of the fact that they are corre

It Is Time to Change Our Paradigm
Too often those of us in the animal welfare industry don’t view our work in “business” terms. Using a phrase such as “inventory management” for our animals seems to reduce them to nothing more than an inanimate object. This is a big mistake on our part. Basic business principles apply to our work and nowhere does it say these terms only apply to non-living items. We must start to trust ourselves and one another and know that we don’t look at animals the same way we do a refri

"A Holiday Miracle: Reuniting Lost Pets with Their Families"
The holiday season, while filled with joy, can also be a time when our beloved pets go missing. With all the hustle and bustle, they might slip away unnoticed, leaving worried families searching far and wide for their furry friends.

The SAINT Benefits for Animal Control
I spent my professional animal welfare career running humane societies and I loved every minute of it. Yes, there were “bad” days and I did get sad more than most other jobs, but I truly felt fulfilled. Before this though, I volunteered for 7 years at an animal control agency and to this day I firmly believe animal control is at the apex of animal welfare. Don’t get me wrong, humane societies and rescues are vital to the overall cause of saving animals, but for the simple fa

Beignet, Gumbo and Praline Benefit from SAINT
SavingLife received word of a breeder who could not sell a mom and 2 of her pups pups (Blacked Mouthed Curs) so he gave them up to rescue. Normally, it would take up to a week to gather all of the necessary information about the dogs (weight, age, pictures, medical, etc), identify potential rescues/humane societies to contact about accepting one or more of these dogs and go through the back and forth communication of email, texts and IMs to find them a new home. With the SAI

Animal Shelters Deserve Our Support
We all know there is no such thing as “perfection”, meaning something without any flaws. Perfection is a wonderful ideal for which to strive, but it is impossible to actually achieve. There are two reasons we will never achieve perfection: The first one is pretty easy. We all make mistakes. Nothing more needs to be said. The second reason though creates bigger problems. Perfection will never be attained because we can’t agree on what defines a “perfect” state. In other words

Comparing the Hard Choices of Scruples to Animal Shelters and Rescues
The game of scruples is a great way to get people thinking about the tough choices we have to make in life. In the game, players are presented with a challenging moral dilemma and then have to decide what they would do in that situation. The goal is to see how your friends and family react to difficult choices and learn a little bit about their values in the process.

What Are You Willing to Do To Help Our Industry?
Have you ever wondered why some organizations, groups or movements drive deep seated, lifetime loyalty from their members? Groups where even when something unsavory is found in their ranks, members make excuses and defend the group as a whole. Please understand, I am not talking only about the easy targets I am sure you are thinking about right now. There are thousands of examples that cross all spectrums from social, to political, to business organizations. The point is, w

Our Fragile Industry
There isn’t much about getting older to brag about. You discover new aches and pains everyday, everyone starts calling you sir and if the volume on the TV isn’t at 50, you have no idea what is going on. The news isn’t all bad though. As you get older, you gain experience and knowledge. You are better prepared for what lies ahead because of what you have already experienced in your life. Hopefully, this leads to avoiding the same problems which occurred the first time around.

Inventory (non-Animal) Management - Best Practices
Most of us are very passionate about animals and so talking about inventory might sound like Animal inventory. But here we are referring to the non-animal inventory that you purchase from online or retail stores for your day-to-day maintenance of your shelter.
